Last night was blissful. It was a cool 65 degrees and my freshly powdered thighs, armpits, and underboob(s) could not have been happier. The weather (I know this is probably getting old for anyone not living in Seattle) has been comparable to the heat coming off of the devil’s undercarriage. It’s humid, it’s hot, and I now know how it feels to live in Seattle’s scrotum. Everything smells peculiar, I smell peculiar, but more so than that it’s the lack of breeze and the sun’s direct jab with its light saber that seems to be cooking the entire city and it doesn’t smell like a pleasant meal, rather it’s tantamount to the frying and dishing up of hot garbage. So when I do find something that smells pleasant I am quick to snatch it up and hold it to my face until my nostrils are full and irritated with it’s aroma.
It just so happens that the rock wall in front of my apartment has sprigs of lavender jutting out of it. My favorite thing to do when I pass by is to steal a few buds and crush them between my fingers, then in tribute to Molly Shannon’s Superstar character I thrust my fingers up to my face and inhale deeply. Lavender always smells so pleasant! In all the time that I had been flouncing by, going hither and thither, I never once thought of actually USING the lavender for anything other than a momentary olfactorgasm. So I grabbed a bunch of lavender and headed to the cool safety of my ceiling fan breeze spun indoors and assessed the interior of my fridge.
With lemons and nectarines on hand as well as an insatiable thirst for all things cold, fizzy, and sweet I concocted my very own Nectarine Lemon Cooler with Honey Lavender Simple Syrup, or NectaMon Cooler with HoLaSirup for short. (I should start creating my own food pokemon, NectaMon I choose YOU!)
1/2 lemon (zest and juice)
1/2 nectarine, sliced
1/2 c honey
1 tsp lavender buds
4-5 ounces sparkling water or club soda
Directions: Simple syrup is one of the easiest things to make. Add honey and water to a pot, bring to a simmer then add lavender buds. Let sit for 10 minutes then strain the buds out and add a few spoons of the simple syrup to your glass. Top with juice and zest from lemon and give it a good stir. Add ice and sliced nectarines then layer on the sparkling water or club soda. Now drank.
